This Week in CPG - Saturday Edition

Happy Saturday, folks. Since it's the weekend and those are scarce, let's dive in...

The Big Story

The sexual wellness category has been on a hot streak for the past 18 months. Thanks to the determination and vision of a handful of founders, products once relegated to dark, wretched sex shops -- lubricants, vibrators, plugs, arousal serums, etc. -- now grace the shelves of department stores like Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom.

Reticent Category Managers at Walmart and CVS have warmed and opened their arms as well. Perhaps most importantly, at least as a leading indicator, venture money has poured in.

That hot streak continued this week with a couple of big fundraising announcements:

  • Dame, a sexual wellness brand founded by Alexandra Fine in 2014, raised $7m in Series A funding. Amboy Street Ventures led.

  • Cake, a sexual wellness brand founded in 2018 by Hunter Morris and Mitch Orkis, raised $8m from Silas Capital, Lerer Hippeau, Selva Ventures, Bullish, and Finn Capital Partners.

Though it's still early days for these new wave sexual wellness brands, the market opportunity is massive:
