The Big Story šŸ“°

According to Reuters, Carlyle Group is preparing to sell Every Man Jack, a menā€™s grooming brand that the private equity firm purchased in 2020.

Founded in 2007 by Ritch Viola, Every Man Jack is best known for selling dozens of clean grooming products like body wash, beard oil, deodorant, shampoo, soap, etc. In addition to their direct-to-consumer business, Every Man Jack also retails at Costco, Kroger, Target, Walmart, and pharmacy chains like CVS and Walgreens.

When it was purchased in 2020, Every Man Jack was reportedly doing just north of $60M in net sales, and now the brand does upwards of $100M in annual sales.

Carlyle hopes to sell Every Man Jack for around $400M.

With Unilever selling a majority stake in Dollar Shave Club last week, and Carlyle ditching the menā€™s grooming space after only three years, it feels like the end of an era for the category. Though the category has gotten extremely competitive in recent years, these moves from Unilever and Carlyle arenā€™t correlated.

Carlyle has openly deemphasized the consumer sector in favor of technology and financial services, while Unilever has other grooming franchises like Axe and Dove to fall back on. The menā€™s grooming category does seem like a race to the bottom, though, and I donā€™t foresee Carlyle, Unilever, or anyone finding meaningful profits there over a sustained period.
